Grand Challenges’ Dr. Jane Fieldhouse authors essay on future of global health leadership
Since January 2025, the United States has withdrawn nearly all of its support for global health programs, aid that was critical to healthcare services, research, infrastructure, and workforce development in low- and middle-income countries around the world. This sudden drop in global health funding devastates current initiatives, eliminates training opportunities for future generations of global health workers, and leaves the field as a whole without strong leadership and coordination. In November, Grand Challenges Postdoctoral Scholar Dr. Jane Fieldhouse and colleagues published an open access essay in PLOS Global Public Health in response to these setbacks. Their essay describes the potential impacts of the cutbacks and outlines a series of best practices to help the global health community move forward and navigate these new obstacles [1].
